Climate change

SRV aims to be fully carbon neutral by 2030. To support this goal, we have created a carbon-neutrality roadmap that guides the entire company. SRV has also joined Green Building Council Finland’s #BuildingLife programme, which aims to achieve a carbon-neutral built environment by 2035. In practice, this means that SRV’s operations will, in the future, generate no more carbon dioxide emissions than can be absorbed by carbon sinks.

To make a zero-emission SRV a reality, a wide range of measures will be implemented between 2022 and 2030 to support the carbon-neutrality targets.

  • All electricity used on our sites is carbon neutral, and we use the lowest-emission heating options available.
  • Our machinery and vehicle fleet will gradually transition to hybrid and electric models.
  • Our travel guidelines encourage environmentally responsible choices.

Through these actions, we are committed to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. Climate action is essential, as the construction sector generates almost one third of Finland’s total emissions.

Lifecycle-wise buildings

The carbon footprint of our lifecycle-wise buildings is minimised throughout their entire life cycle, from construction to use and eventual demolition. During construction, we focus on energy efficiency, use carbon-neutral electricity, minimise material waste and sort all waste carefully. We choose environmentally friendly and low-carbon materials, pay attention to durability and transport distances, and make use of recycled and renewable materials. We work closely with our suppliers to identify responsible solutions.

During use, energy efficiency, water efficiency, easy maintenance, long-lasting materials and renewable energy sources – such as geothermal energy, air-to-water heat pumps and solar power – all help reduce the carbon footprint. Our buildings are designed to achieve the highest A-energy rating.

At the demolition stage, we emphasise the reuse and recycling of materials. We produce detailed material documentation that supports recycling and reuse at the end of the building’s life.

Low-carbon construction sites

Emissions from construction sites matter to all of us. Construction is one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions in Finland. By reducing emissions during construction, we can directly influence Finland’s total emissions and reduce the burden on our living environment. All SRV construction sites have been low-carbon since the beginning of 2022.

Carbon-neutrality roadmap

Our journey towards a zero-emission SRV continues, and to support this we have created a carbon-neutrality roadmap that guides all our operations. We are also part of Green Building Council Finland’s #BuildingLife programme, which aims to achieve a carbon-neutral built environment by 2035.
