Occupational health and safety

We protect our workforce and everyone affected by our operations, and we work determinedly to achieve our goals. SRV is a member of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health’s Zero Accidents Forum and committed to its Zero Accidents vision.

Our long-term target is to reduce the Lost Time Injury Frequency rate (LTIF) covering both SRV employees and subcontractors by 15% by 2030.

We aim to be a forerunner in responsibility and in promoting a strong safety culture in our industry.

At SRV, a healthy and safe working environment forms the foundation of everything we do. A safe and equal workplace is achieved through consistent efforts, a good working atmosphere, respectful and fair treatment of everyone around us, and compliance with societal obligations.

SRV’s occupational health and safety work is developed as part of our ISO 45001 management system and HSEQ operations. It is guided by our Occupational Health and Safety Policy, which defines the general principles of safety management. Site safety is ensured through processes in accordance with the management system. To ensure compliance, we follow SRV’s Code of Conduct for partners and personnel, our contract programme for cooperation partners, and thorough induction practices.

Culture of intervention and caring

In line with SRV’s safety theme, we focus especially on strengthening a culture of appropriate intervention and ensuring that every person working on our sites has a safe working environment. Everyone has the right to intervene if they observe unnecessary risks being taken or safety being neglected. We want to ensure that our working environment is never compromised.

We lead by example and thereby ensure that our workplaces are safe and healthy. The same rules apply to everyone, and everyone is responsible for addressing and reacting if they observe a breach of the rules.

We do not silently accept repeated risk-taking or leave safety issues unaddressed. Every near miss and accident is carefully reviewed. We learn and share lessons from each incident.

If agreed rules are repeatedly violated, endangering one’s own or others’ safety, we have clear procedures to address such situations immediately. No one should face danger at work due to someone else’s unsafe actions.

Risk management as part of safety leadership

Construction is statistically the most hazardous industry, which is why we must pay special attention to occupational health and safety both in production and from a personnel perspective. SRV applies a comprehensive safety programme to ensure a safe working environment and to systematically reduce accidents leading to absences.

Risk management in construction projects begins already at the project development stage. We take into account the nature of the project, the client’s requirements and the future users of the building. We also identify potential major accident risks — such as rail networks or process plants — as well as environmental safety risks, for example in high-rise construction. The site safety plan describes the actions needed to manage these identified risks and to carry out the work safely.

Risk management continues throughout the project. We assess work safety risks before each task begins and manage site safety on a daily basis. Any deviations are addressed immediately.

Promoting wellbeing across shared workplaces

SRV takes its responsibility as the main contractor seriously and strives to create good conditions for all work carried out on shared workplaces. The social impacts of our responsibility extend beyond our own personnel to our extensive network of partners. We engage in open dialogue and collect feedback from subcontractors to improve the working community — we want to know how we perform so that we can continuously develop our operations.

SRV treats all people equally and does not tolerate discrimination or harassment under any circumstances. We also require all partners to respect human rights. SRV’s Code of Conduct for partners defines these expectations.

We offer our employees continuous opportunities for professional development and regular training on current topics. We operate in line with our equality plan.

A good working atmosphere and quality leadership are key pillars of wellbeing at SRV, supported by our active occupational health and safety work. We provide statutory occupational healthcare as well as preventive services that support work ability. SRV has an occupational health care plan, and we are a substance-free workplace.

The buildings we construct have long-term health impacts on their users. This requires careful design and intelligent choices in construction solutions and building services. A well-designed built environment enhances everyday wellbeing, supports work and is sustainable for the environment. Factors that promote wellbeing include clean indoor air, comfortable temperatures and good lighting.

Intervention is caring

SRV’s 2023 safety theme encourages everyone to address safety shortcomings without hesitation and to ensure a safe working environment for all. Both on our construction sites and in our offices, every colleague has the right to intervene if they notice unnecessary risk-taking or neglect of safety.
