SRV delivered a versatile hotel, restaurant and event complex at Oulu Market Square, strengthening the city’s tourism and event offering and bringing new life to the market square area.
SRV and real estate investment company Balder Finland signed an agreement in July 2025 for the sale of the property in central Oulu and the completion of the construction work. Construction resumed in autumn 2025, and the project was completed in time for summer 2026, during Oulu’s year as European Capital of Culture.
A new hotel and event venue at Oulu Market Square
The development includes the 144-room Scandic Go, Oulu hotel, combining smart design with digital solutions. The hotel also has lobby and café areas for relaxing and working, as well as a self-service laundry.
At street level, Tarkastamo is a restaurant and event venue of approximately 1,800 square metres, operated by Oulu-based 2 Fam Group. The restaurant has seating for around 120 people indoors, as well as a large patio that is open during the summer. The building also has an underground car park with 74 parking spaces and provision for electric vehicle charging
Historic building becomes part of the new development
A distinctive feature of the project was the integration of the partly protected former meat inspection building, dating from the late 19th century, into the new development. The façade was restored where necessary, using old bricks salvaged from the roof.
The space now forms a natural part of the development while appropriately reflecting the history of the area. The building is also located in a historic setting on the market square, surrounded by old market storehouses, with the hotel immediately next to Oulu Market Hall.
