Wood City is a wooden quarter built in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki, bringing together housing, work and lifecycle-wise construction. Developed by SRV and Stora Enso, the quarter is a flagship of Finnish wood construction.
Wood City is located close to Helsinki city centre with excellent transport connections. Combining urban living and working, the wooden quarter consists of two residential apartment buildings, two office buildings and a parking facility. The quarter is part of the rapidly developing Jätkäsaari district, which by 2030 will be home to more than 20,000 residents and provide jobs for an estimated 6,000 people.
Sustainable development and skilful wood construction were at the heart of the lifecycle-wise quarter from the outset. At Wood City, wood is not simply a building material, but an integral part of the identity of the entire quarter.
A showcase of Finnish wood construction
Wood City is a significant showcase of Finnish wood construction. We developed the quarter in cooperation with Stora Enso, with Anttinen Oiva Architects responsible for the architectural design.
“The idea behind Wood City was from the outset to introduce a new kind of thinking about business premises in Finland and create a unique wooden quarter combining design and sustainable development,” says Jouni Forsman, SRV’s Director responsible for business premises construction in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
Its location in Jätkäsaari makes Wood City a prominent part of Helsinki’s urban landscape. The quarter can be reached from the city centre by tram in around ten minutes.

Work environments for pioneers
Wood City is home to two internationally significant Finnish technology companies, Supercell and WithSecure. The office buildings were designed in close cooperation with the clients to ensure that the premises meet their employees’ needs and ways of working.
The design took into account flexible ways of working, environmental sustainability and employee wellbeing. The aim was to create work environments that suit the companies’ cultures and operations and in which people will enjoy working well into the future.
The property was aiming for international LEED Platinum environmental certification upon completion.

Positive carbon handprint
Wood is used extensively in different forms throughout Wood City: in the exterior walls, timber frame, roof structure and façade cladding. The material is both visible and tangible in the architecture of the quarter.
Wood is a good choice when the aim is lifecycle-wise construction. It is a fully renewable and recyclable building material that stores carbon. As a result, the carbon footprint of a wooden building is considerably lower than that of a concrete-structured building.
Wood brings warmth and softness to building interiors. It is also an acoustically and visually pleasing material that can improve indoor air quality and reduce stress levels.
