Special featureTextile fibre production facility powered by renewable energy

SRV delivered an energy-efficient fibre production facility for Woodspin in the Eteläportti industrial area in Jyväskylä. The facility uses waste heat in a way that is unique on a global scale and produces SPINNOVA® textile fibre.

In 2022, we completed an energy-efficient fibre production facility in the Eteläportti industrial area in Jyväskylä, where waste heat is utilised in a way that is unique on a global scale. The new facility produces SPINNOVA® textile fibre from wood-based cellulose for the textile industry. The fibre is ecological and manufactured without dissolving or harmful chemicals.

Jykia, a property development company owned by local municipalities, commissioned the industrial building for Woodspin Oy, a joint venture between materials innovation company Spinnova and pulp producer Suzano. The same property also houses Spinnova’s headquarters and the MFC facility of Suzano, the world’s largest producer of wood pulp.

Wood takes centre stage in the modern production facility

Wood and its sustainable use are at the heart of the company’s business, and wood was therefore identified at an early stage as an essential part of the new building’s identity. Wood and other ecological natural materials were used extensively in the surface materials of the wooden building.

From a construction perspective, the facility included particularly demanding production and laboratory spaces. The completed property has a floor area of approximately 11,500 square metres, comprising around 9,500 square metres of production halls and approximately 2,000 square metres of office and laboratory space.

Making use of waste heat

The energy-efficient facility is an excellent example of a lifecycle-wise building that operates on renewable energy and recovered heat. In addition, energy generated in the production process is fed back into the district heating network.

According to Spinnova CEO Kim Poulsen, the project is unique on a global scale:

“Together with the local energy company, we developed a concept that allows us to utilise waste heat and thereby significantly reduce the factory’s carbon dioxide emissions. The fact that a construction project of this kind, with its production and laboratory facilities, was completed a month ahead of schedule in a challenging and unstable global situation is an excellent achievement,” says Poulsen.

Delivered by listening to the customer

The construction of technically demanding facilities and a winter with heavy snowfall brought their own challenges to the project. Despite the conditions, the successful delivery of the project also received praise from property development company Jykia.

“The entire Jyväskylä region benefits greatly from having industrial operations and jobs in Eteläportti. The Woodspin factory is a major investment and a source of pride for Jykia. We have been extremely satisfied with SRV’s professional approach, and we were delighted that the project was completed ahead of schedule,” says Seija Takanen, CEO of Jykia.

Through a professional approach and by listening to the customer’s wishes, we achieved the targets set for the project. According to Poulsen, SRV not only kept to the schedule but also stayed within budget and delivered energy-efficient, functional facilities for Woodspin.

Whenever something is done for the first time in the world, changes inevitably arise along the way. Fortunately, we had a reliable partner for the project, and we have only positive things to say about SRV’s ability to listen to the customer. The facilities reflect our needs, and SRV responded very well to our requests for changes while maintaining an ongoing dialogue about alternative solutions.
