Wood construction

Wood is a highly versatile construction material. Mass timber can be used to create architecturally striking buildings. SRV has delivered a wide range of demanding wood construction projects in Finland, including offices, residential buildings, learning environments and even an arena.

Wood is a renewable and recyclable construction material that stores carbon. Wood buildings can have a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional buildings and act as long-term carbon stores. The wood materials we use are always sourced from responsibly managed forests.

Increasing the use of wood is at the core of our lifecycle-wise strategy

Increasing the use of wood in construction is one important way to build lifecycle-wise, reduce emissions and lower a building’s carbon footprint. Wood can be used in many different ways wherever it is the most suitable material. A building’s load-bearing frame can be constructed from mass timber, or wood can be used in selected parts of the building, such as façades.

When mass timber is used for the building frame, its carbon footprint can be significantly lower than that of a comparable concrete structure. The timber frame stores carbon throughout the building’s lifecycle, and the material can also be reused or recycled at the end of its lifecycle. At best, combining wood as a construction material with renewable energy can even contribute to a positive carbon handprint.
