Vesimaailma Louhi in Lempäälä is a modern aquatic centre and spa located 30 metres below the Ideapark shopping centre. SRV delivered this exceptional underground development, combining versatile aquatic facilities with energy-efficient solutions.
We built the new aquatic centre and spa in Lempäälä in cooperation with the Municipality of Lempäälä and Kiinteistö Oy Ideapark. Covering approximately 5,800 m² GFA, Vesimaailma Louhi has a total pool area of 2,000 m², a wide range of activities and several different saunas.
Located beneath Ideapark, Vesimaailma Louhi serves swimmers, families with children, fitness enthusiasts and visitors looking to relax. Its facilities include a 25-metre, six-lane fitness swimming pool, a 23-metre aqua jogging pool, a multipurpose pool, a teaching pool, a children’s pool and waterslide, a cold pool and a massage pool with bubble jets.
An aquatic centre and spa beneath a shopping centre
Vesimaailma Louhi was an exceptional construction project, as we built it 30 metres underground beneath the Ideapark shopping centre. Building underground placed particular demands on logistics, working conditions and safety.
All materials and personnel had to access the construction site through an opening less than three metres high. This required precise planning and careful scheduling of day-to-day site operations, with every stage planned in advance.
The building’s location also supports energy efficiency. The rock walls surrounding the underground space warmed up as the site was heated during construction. By the time construction was completed, the walls had absorbed heat, significantly reducing the need for heating during operation compared with an above-ground swimming pool.

Energy-efficient heat recovery
The solutions used at Vesimaailma Louhi were designed to minimise energy consumption. The new aquatic centre has the world’s first low-temperature district heating capability, as well as the option to store district heat.
A heat recovery system was installed in the aquatic centre and spa to significantly reduce energy consumption. The system recovers heat from wastewater from the showers and pools as well as from ventilation air, allowing the heat to be reused.
High-quality material choices were also a priority. For example, high-quality membrane filtration is used to purify the pool water.
