The new Okmetic factory building is a technically demanding industrial project designed to meet the needs of the modern semiconductor industry. SRV delivered the 42,500 m² GFA facility in Vantaa while silicon wafer production continued uninterrupted on the site.
Okmetic’s new factory building in Vantaa was delivered as a collaborative project management contract tailored to the customer’s needs. Okmetic is the world’s seventh-largest silicon wafer manufacturer and the global market leader in supplying high-performance silicon wafers.
Modern facilities for high-tech production
The facilities of Okmetic’s new factory were designed to meet the requirements of the modern semiconductor industry, incorporating the latest technologies. The silicon wafers produced at the factory are used in the manufacture of electronic components. This high-tech production environment represented a demanding construction project in which SRV was able to draw on its experience of delivering other technically demanding facilities.
The new building has a total gross floor area of 42,500 square metres. In terms of industrial construction in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, the project is exceptionally large. The piling works were carried out by SRV Infra.
Driven by customer needs
The construction project was carried out with the customer’s requirements at the forefront. In addition to SRV’s own subcontracting packages, the project management contract included the coordination of subordinated subcontracts and separate procurements commissioned directly by Okmetic.
For the project organisation, it was essential to have a thorough understanding of the client’s industrial processes and the specific requirements of the new facility. Silicon wafer production continued in the adjacent building throughout the construction period. The manufacturing process imposed strict requirements for vibration control: vibrations from either the surrounding environment or within the facility itself could not be allowed to disturb the production equipment.
It is great that we were able to partner with an experienced and skilled construction company like SRV for this very demanding construction project. The semiconductor industry requires exceptional precision and functionality in both the building and its utilities. The difficulty is further increased by the uninterrupted production of vibration-sensitive wafers at the current production facility on the same site.
