Matinkylä Upper Secondary School provides modern, flexible and energy-efficient facilities for around 900 students. The development delivered by SRV also includes Espoo’s largest sports hall suitable for competitions.
We built Matinkylä Upper Secondary School under a project management contract, with the City of Espoo’s Premises Department as the client.
The new upper secondary school, located west of the Iso Omena shopping centre, provides flexible and energy-efficient facilities for around 900 students. The approximately 11,000 m² GFA development includes teaching facilities, a gym and Espoo’s largest sports hall suitable for competitions.
The project began with the development phase in October 2020, and construction started in late 2021. At its busiest, around 140 people worked on the site. Students began studying in the new school building in early 2023.
A school designed for different uses
Matinkylä Upper Secondary School is a flexible school whose facilities can be adapted to different teaching needs, both now and in the future. The five-storey new building has been designed for a wide range of activities, and spaces can also be combined for larger teaching groups.
The building provides students and staff with versatile facilities and modern educational technology. The building services support good indoor air quality and safe, healthy facilities. The sports hall built as part of the school serves both school sports and competitive events.
The school’s light-coloured appearance and architecture are based on a proposal called Lyhty by Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects. The glass façades bring natural light into the interior and open the building up to its surroundings.

Lifecycle wisdom began on the construction site
From the outset, one of the aims of Matinkylä Upper Secondary School was to reduce the building’s energy consumption and environmental impact. The project meets the EU Taxonomy assessment criteria.
Geothermal energy was introduced on the construction site during the construction phase using the Geolo solution, allowing renewable energy to be used as early as possible. At the same time, conditions during construction remained under control and energy was used efficiently throughout the construction phase. The carbon dioxide savings achieved with Geolo and geothermal energy correspond to an approximately 5.5% reduction in the property’s lifecycle emissions compared with the use of fossil fuels.
Geothermal wells with a combined depth of almost 8 kilometres were drilled to depths of around 400 metres. The building’s geothermal system provides heating and cooling as required. In summer, for example, the system transfers excess heat back into the ground. Solar panels installed on the school roof also generate clean energy.

The Matinkylä Upper Secondary School building met all of the City of Espoo’s carbon neutrality targets already during the construction phase. In addition, it meets all our requirements for low energy consumption.
