One of Finland’s largest hospital projects. The building, due for completion in 2030, will become a modern healthcare centre that makes use of renewable energy. The alliance model brings the strength of collaboration to the project.
Laakso Joint Hospital is a joint project by the City of Helsinki and HUS, involving the construction of psychiatric and somatic hospital facilities in the Laakso area. In addition, a new building for forensic psychiatry is being constructed in Ohkola, Mäntsälä.
The three new hospital buildings and two buildings undergoing major refurbishment will provide more than 900 hospital beds in total. The project is being delivered under an alliance contract and is one of Finland’s largest hospital projects, with SRV as the main contractor.
In addition to the hospital, the project includes extensive underground construction and tunnel excavation. An underground service level for the hospital, a car park for 550 cars and an approximately 800-metre logistics tunnel connecting the Meilahti and Laakso hospital areas are being constructed.
Lifecycle objectives guide both design and delivery
Sustainability and lifecycle wisdom are key design principles for the Laakso Joint Hospital project.
The project’s new buildings are being designed and constructed to achieve energy efficiency that is at least 10 per cent better than the national regulatory level and to comply with the EU Taxonomy. The project also includes the major refurbishment of two existing buildings, whose energy efficiency will be improved as part of the refurbishment.
Energy production will utilise both waste energy generated in the area and renewable energy produced on site. Waste heat from the building will also be recycled and recovered. For example, 80 per cent of heat from ventilation air can be recovered.
