Special featureOne of the largest hospital projects in Finland

Laakso Joint Hospital is a joint development by the City of Helsinki and HUS. The project will deliver both psychiatric and somatic hospital facilities in Laakso, and a new building for forensic psychiatry in Ohkola, Mäntsälä. The development includes three new hospital buildings and the refurbishment of two existing buildings, providing more than 900 hospital beds in total. Delivered as an alliance project, it is one of the largest hospital construction projects ever carried out in Finland. SRV is the main contractor. In addition to the new hospital buildings, the project includes extensive underground works and tunnel excavation, carried out by SRV Infra. Below ground, the project will provide a service level for hospital functions, a 550-space car park and an approximately 800-metre logistics tunnel connecting the Meilahti and Laakso hospital areas.

Lifecycle objectives guide both design and delivery

Energy performance and lifecycle-wise solutions are at the core of the project. The new buildings are designed to exceed national energy efficiency requirements by at least 10% and to comply with the EU Taxonomy for sustainable construction. The two existing buildings being refurbished will also see their energy efficiency significantly improved.

Energy production will utilise both recovered waste heat from the area and on-site renewable energy. The building’s waste heat will be recycled efficiently — for example, up to 80% of heat from ventilation air will be recovered.
