The major refurbishment of Anaesthesia and Surgery Unit K at Jorvi Hospital modernised demanding hospital facilities within a fully operational hospital. SRV completed the approximately 10,500 m² GFA project on schedule, providing Jorvi Hospital with 20 operating theatres.
We carried out the major refurbishment of Anaesthesia and Surgery Unit K at Jorvi Hospital in 2023. The project covered the anaesthesia and surgery unit as well as facilities for the Heart Centre and laboratories. We also provided the necessary temporary facilities to enable hospital operations to continue throughout the project.
Unit K performs abdominal, endocrine, plastic and burn surgery as well as orthopaedic and trauma surgery. More than half of the procedures are emergency operations, making the functionality of the facilities and the smooth running of the hospital’s day-to-day operations particularly important.
Carefully phased construction work
The project was carried out within a fully operational hospital, requiring careful planning and particular attention at every stage. Hospital operations had to continue safely throughout the major refurbishment.
The work was coordinated with the hospital’s day-to-day operations to minimise disruption. Staff were kept well informed about the different stages of the project, and progress was planned in close dialogue with the client.
The pandemic also presented its own challenges. Despite the demanding environment, the project progressed as planned and was completed on schedule.

Experience in demanding healthcare environments
In the major refurbishment of Jorvi Hospital’s Unit K, we drew on the experience we have gained from healthcare construction and projects involving demanding specialist facilities.
Successful delivery in projects like this depends on several factors working together: safe implementation, clear phasing, effective communication and an understanding that the hospital’s day-to-day operations must be the starting point for construction.
The project continued the long-standing cooperation between SRV and HUS. We have delivered several demanding projects for HUS, including the Bridge Hospital in Meilahti, Helsinki, the largest construction project in HUS’s history, as well as the new ward building at Jorvi Hospital.

New operating theatres serve all patient groups
Following the major refurbishment, all the new operating theatres are suitable for treating all patient groups. Jorvi Hospital now has 20 operating theatres that will support demanding surgical care and the hospital’s day-to-day operations well into the future. The successful delivery of the project was based on close cooperation between HUS, SRV and the designers.
The project stayed on schedule and within its original budget. Despite the challenges we encountered along the way, including the exceptional pandemic period, we succeeded thanks to close cooperation between HUS, SRV and the designers
