We carried out the major refurbishment of the University of Helsinki’s Think Corner as an alliance project with the University of Helsinki and JKMM Architects. The project created first-class facilities for the activities and events held at Think Corner.
The renewal of the University of Helsinki’s administration building was completed in September 2017. The project gave the former administration building a new role, transforming it into Think Corner, a more open and versatile space designed to better serve all users.
“The refurbishment transformed the building into modern, versatile office and working spaces, while the street and K1 levels became an informal meeting place for city residents and the university community. The sports facilities in the basement were also expanded,” says Pekka Kähkönen, Project Manager at SRV.
The building’s main entrance was relocated opposite Porthania Square. The façade was opened up at street level, the window openings were altered and the courtyard was roofed over. The courtyard became Think Corner’s central Stage, connecting the building’s spaces and functions.
At Think Corner, the long-standing collaboration between SRV and the University of Helsinki continued under the alliance model. “We have worked successfully with the University of Helsinki on more than twenty projects,” says Antti Raunemaa, Production Director at SRV and a member of the alliance management team.
As a result, Think Corner gained new facilities for both events and working. The building became a living room for science, open to everyone, and also houses a café and bookshop.
