Kirkkonummi set out to create a modern, sustainable and healthy school that would meet the needs of modern learning. With SRV’s lifecycle model, the municipality gained a new building designed to retain its value well into the future.
When the future of Kirkkoharju School and Finnsbacka Daycare Centre in Kirkkonummi was being considered, it became clear that renovating the old facilities was no longer worthwhile. Teaching methods had evolved, the number of children had increased and the municipality wanted to invest in high-quality facilities that would serve users for decades to come.
“We wanted to build a modern, healthy and versatile learning environment that supports teaching while also taking environmental considerations into account,” says Deputy Headteacher Petteri Tuomi.
The aim was to create an entirely new learning centre serving both early childhood education and comprehensive education. The facilities needed to adapt to different activities, learning content and ways of working for more than a thousand children. SRV was selected to deliver the project under a design and build contract, including maintenance services.
Facilities built to last
Under SRV’s lifecycle model, SRV manages the project as a whole, from design and construction through to the maintenance of the completed building. The model is based on close cooperation between SRV and the client, with a strong focus on high-quality design and construction.
Jokirinne Learning Centre was delivered under a design and build contract and as a ten-year lifecycle project, with SRV responsible for both construction and the maintenance and servicing of the property after completion. This arrangement gives the municipality greater certainty over maintenance quality and costs.
The building was designed in collaboration with its users. Teachers were able to explore the facilities using VR technology at an early stage, and their feedback was used to further develop the learning centre to meet the needs of teaching. Children and young people from the municipality also took part in the project by painting a community artwork for the interior under the guidance of visual artist Sanna Jalomäki and designer Sinivuokko Koivula.
A school for the future
Construction began with earthworks in autumn 2018 and progressed from foundation work to the installation of prefabricated elements in early 2019. The three-storey learning centre was completed in 2020 and opened in early 2021. Thanks to SRV’s lifecycle service, the Municipality of Kirkkonummi gained a new building designed to retain its value well into the future.
Jokirinne Learning Centre now provides flexible and adaptable facilities for 1,100 pupils and 240 children in early childhood education. The learning environments can be adapted to different learning content and ways of working, while the sports hall and its spectator stands can even accommodate national-level sporting events.
We chose a lifecycle project because we wanted the management of the property and related services to be as easy and straightforward as possible. The new learning centre is important to both the school community and local residents. Our warm thanks to SRV for the excellent cooperation throughout the project.
