The new ward building at Jorvi Hospital provides modern facilities designed to support patient care. SRV delivered the project under an alliance contract in a busy hospital environment, with daily activities continuing with minimal disruption throughout construction.

SRV delivered Jorvi Hospital’s new ward building under an alliance contract, providing the hospital campus with modern facilities designed to support patient care. The work was carried out with minimal disruption to the neighbouring hospital, school and day care centre.

The new ward building brings many of the hospital campus’s key functions under one roof. Its five main floors and basement include the main lobby, inpatient wards for adults and children, paediatric outpatient facilities, a maternity ward, imaging facilities and facilities supporting the operation of the hospital campus.

The energy solutions for the new building were designed from the outset to support HUS’s environmental programme. The aim was to create a building that maintains comfortable indoor conditions without using unnecessary energy for heating, cooling or ventilation.

Energy is used where it is needed

The new ward building at Jorvi Hospital has a solar power system, while most of the energy for heating and cooling is produced using a heat pump solution. Energy optimisation during operation adjusts the building’s energy use according to demand.

Spaces and equipment requiring continuous cooling are cooled using heat pumps and water chillers, enabling free cooling to be utilised during the winter. Condenser heat from the equipment is used for heating purposes, including underfloor heating in washrooms, preheating domestic hot water and outdoor snow-melting systems.

Ventilation is also demand-controlled. In some office areas, for example, ventilation is increased only when the spaces are in use.

Flexible facilities for everyday hospital needs

The facilities in Jorvi Hospital’s new ward building were designed to meet the hospital’s changing day-to-day needs and adapt to future changes. Users were involved in the design process, for example through mock-up rooms, allowing solutions to be tested from the perspective of practical work before construction.

The location of the hospital’s different functions was also carefully considered. Placing mutually supporting functions close to one another makes it easier for professionals to work together and improves patient safety.

The wards have been organised into larger units so that patient beds can be used flexibly across different medical specialties. In line with modern hospital design, patient rooms are mainly single rooms.

A hospital, school and day care centre next door

We built the new ward building immediately adjacent to Jorvi Hospital, Espoo Hospital, Keinumäki School and Jorvi day care centre. Daily activities in the area had to continue with as little disruption as possible throughout construction, even though around 550 people were working on the site simultaneously at its busiest.

Successfully working in such a busy environment required more than good construction. It called for careful planning, a shared understanding of the situation and continuous dialogue. The site team maintained regular contact with neighbouring organisations throughout the project. Open communication and cooperation played a crucial role in the project.

“The construction site has been challenging due to its immediate proximity to operational hospitals. However, cooperation has enabled hospital operations to continue with almost no disruption. This can be considered an excellent achievement, given the exceptionally large scale and demanding nature of the project.”
