Inkeroinen multipurpose building brings early childhood education, teaching and leisure services together under one roof in Kouvola. The development delivered by SRV combines the old school with a new building, creating flexible spaces for different users.
SRV built the new Inkeroinen multipurpose building for the City of Kouvola’s premises services. The development comprises the old school building on the site and a new building that connects naturally with it. Completed in 2025, the building provides facilities for almost 700 children and young people in early childhood education, pre-primary education and basic education. It also houses a youth centre, library and sports hall.
Flexible spaces through collaboration
The project was delivered as a collaborative turnkey contract, with SRV responsible for the design and construction in close cooperation with the client, the City of Kouvola’s premises services.
The collaborative approach was well suited to a building designed to serve several different user groups. The spaces were designed to adapt to different needs: during the day, the building is used for early childhood education and teaching, while in the evenings and at weekends it also provides facilities for activities such as adult education, local organisations and the wider community. This ensures that the spaces are used efficiently and that the building serves the local area in many different ways.
Wood you can see and feel
CLT (cross-laminated timber) elements were used as the main material in the timber construction of the building. Most of the interior timber wall surfaces were left exposed, giving the spaces a warm appearance. Wood also provides good acoustic properties and contributes to a pleasant indoor environment.
A total of around 2,000 cubic metres of wood was used in the building. The wood stores approximately 1,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the building’s lifetime. This is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions generated by driving an average Finnish car with an internal combustion engine around the world 183 times.
The result is a multipurpose building in Inkeroinen that supports the everyday lives of children and young people while also providing space for community activities in the area.
This is the first collaborative turnkey project in Kouvola. I can honestly say that I have been delighted by how well the client and the representatives of the services that will use the building have been involved in the design and decision-making. The collaborative approach has increased interaction and openness beyond what is usual.
