REDI and the Kalasatama towers have created a new urban centre in Helsinki. Built by SRV, the development brings together services, housing, workplaces and a rooftop park as part of Kalasatama's new skyline.

The REDI shopping centre, built by SRV and opened in 2018, forms a unique development in the heart of the growing Kalasatama district, together with residential and office towers, a parking facility for 2,000 cars and a park. The tallest of the towers rises to 134 metres, and together they form Kalasatama's new skyline, visible from afar in every direction.

The REDI shopping centre and towers have created a hub for living, working and shopping at a major transport interchange in Kalasatama, contributing to the development of Helsinki's eastern inner city. The project has brought a diverse range of urban amenities and services to Helsinki residents.

A shopping centre built around the metro station

REDI is located directly adjacent to Kalasatama metro station, with direct access from the metro platform to the shopping centre's third floor during opening hours.

The shopping centre is conveniently located at the intersection of several transport routes. In addition to energy efficiency, the building's location earned particularly high scores in its environmental assessment. REDI is easy to reach by metro, car, bicycle, on foot or by bus.

The journey from Kalasatama metro station to Helsinki Central Railway Station takes just six minutes. The metro also provides passengers with easy access to the entire southern rail network.

At REDI, Itäväylä and the metro line are covered by an extensive green deck, which accommodates the residential buildings' courtyards and the public Bryga park.

Sustainable development

The starting point for REDI's design was to find solutions that would support environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. The project examined the use of energy, water and other natural resources throughout the building's lifecycle. Design and construction solutions were assessed using lifecycle analyses and calculations.

The design and construction were guided by the objectives and requirements set by the City of Helsinki, with the LEED environmental certification system used to support the process.

As a project, REDI supported the City of Helsinki's environmental and urban development objectives by transforming former industrial and transport areas for new uses. Achieving LEED Platinum certification demonstrated the project's success in sustainable construction.

Green Structure of the Year

Bryga is a rooftop park at REDI where visitors can relax and enjoy views of the sea, while the noise of traffic on Itäväylä is muffled beneath the glass-covered deck. Making use of the space above a busy main road was an innovative way to increase green space in the city. In recognition of this, Bryga received the Green Structure of the Year 2020 award.

Approximately 35 per cent of Bryga's surface area is covered by vegetation, with a further 18 per cent consisting of other permeable surfaces. The planted areas support urban biodiversity, capture air pollutants and help manage stormwater runoff. A stormwater collection system was installed beneath the park deck to retain water and regulate moisture conditions in the park.

Rising to the height of neighbouring rooftops, the park is complemented by Kalasatama's waterfront promenades, canals and green spaces. Bryga can be reached by lift from the REDI shopping centre or via outdoor stairs from Englantilaisaukio square. Pedestrian bridges crossing the Baana cycling route also connect the park to the courtyards of the Kalasatama towers.

SRV:n suurin rakennushanke

The Kalasatama towers were the first in Finland to offer the opportunity to live in a skyscraper. The multi-tower development is the largest construction project in SRV's history.

The towers embody a concept of urban living that offers convenience in everyday life, easy access to services and, of course, impressive views. High-rise construction also supports sustainable urban development by making efficient use of well-connected sites through vertical construction.

The first of the eight planned towers to be completed was Majakka, rising to a height of 134 metres, at the end of 2019. It was followed by the 124-metre Loisto in 2021 and the 120-metre Lumo One in 2022.

Visio, standing approximately 100 metres tall, was completed in 2023. The most recent addition was Horisontti, a 111-metre office tower completed in 2025.
