Construction of the Marjoniemi comprehensive school begins – adaptable premises for a total of 780 students
SRV and the City of Kouvola have signed an implementation agreement for the construction of the Marjoniemi comprehensive school in Kouvola. The project will be carried out as a cooperative turnkey contract. Valued at approximately EUR 33 million for SRV, it will be recorded in SRV’s order backlog for March 2026. The Marjoniemi comprehensive school, which will be built in the centre of Kouvola, is designed to accommodate 780 students in grades 1–9, including both general and special education students. The new comprehensive school will be attended by students from the current Kaunisnurmi school, Kouvola coeducational school and Urheilupuisto school. Construction will begin immediately with the aim that the new premises will be ready for use by the autumn semester of 2028.

We’ll be able to harness the expertise we’ve gained in earlier projects. Last spring, we completed the construction of the Inkeroinen multipurpose building in Kouvola, which proceeded smoothly and on schedule. We bring our well-rounded expertise in school construction and cooperative contracting to the Marjoniemi comprehensive school project. The cooperative contracting model is particularly well-suited to school construction and enables us to carry out the project flexibly while listening to the client,” says SRV's Unit Director Jarkko Salmenoja.
The new building will feature a state-of-the-art learning environment designed with adaptability in mind. It will enable children and young people to grow and learn under one roof. Adaptability and flexibility are taken into consideration in both the premises design and the structural and building systems solutions. For example, classrooms can be combined or connected to the foyer. Some of the specially equipped classrooms for subject-based teaching can also be used for general teaching. Local residents will also be able to make extensive use of the building, as it will provide premises for organisations, clubs and an adult education centre. The school will have just over 10,000 square metres of gross floor area. The Marjoniemi healthcare centre that previously stood on the site was demolished in 2023.
During the development phase which started in October 2025, the parties worked together to find the implementation solutions that would best meet the project’s objectives. The project’s total cost and timetable were also defined in more detail during the development phase.
“Now that this excellent development process has been completed, we’re about to start up the construction of the Marjoniemi comprehensive school. We’ve teamed up with our long-standing partner SRV to build an adaptable and state-of-the-art school for our students and teachers. The project is a continuation of the City of Kouvola’s long-term efforts to develop a sustainable and personalised school network that supports learning,” says Minna Kortesmaa, Property Development Manager, City of Kouvola.
In addition to adaptability, the project is also focusing especially on energy efficiency. The building is designed to meet Class A energy-efficiency requirements.
The City of Kouvola promotes employment through its public procurement. The contract includes the main contractor's obligation to employ at least one unemployed job seeker during the construction phase.
