We built a multipurpose hall for Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) in the Rauma shipyard area. The developer was a property company jointly owned by the City of Rauma and RMC. With a volume of over 226,000 cubic metres, the hall is one of the largest industrial buildings in Rauma. The total area is approximately 13,000 gross square metres. The building is 186 metres long, 44 metres wide and 32 metres high. The main hall was completed at the end of 2022, followed by the adjoining office complex in 2023.
A hall supporting marine industry and national maritime defence
RMC is a world-leading specialist in building and maintaining passenger car ferries, icebreakers and vessels required by the Finnish Defence Forces. The new hall will be used for constructing state vessels and passenger car ferries.
The hall provides top-level professionals with a safe, weather-protected indoor environment. It plays a central role in the construction of the four multirole corvettes under the Squadron 2020 programme, which is essential for Finland’s maritime defence.
“The Squadron 2020 project is extremely important for RMC, for the marine industry in Rauma and for Finland as a whole. It is excellent that we can build these advanced vessels in a dedicated multipurpose hall designed specifically for this work,” says Mika Laurilehto, Deputy CEO of RMC.
A lifecycle-wise project designed for future needs
The project took into account energy efficiency, long-term versatility, user requirements and overall economic performance. For example, the energy-efficient hall heats only the zones where work is carried out, and indoor air quality has been carefully considered.
“The project is delivered in a lifecycle-wise manner, with attention to energy efficiency and diverse future needs. Collaboration with the client has gone well, and the professional on-site team has ensured smooth progress and the special solutions required by the hall. The hall’s three ventilation plant rooms were exceptionally built fully complete, with interior finishes and equipment, at the supplier’s facilities before being lifted onto the hall roof and connected to the building systems,” says Eerik Leivo, Project Manager at SRV.
Close collaboration at the core of success
Close cooperation throughout the construction project delivered excellent results and supported the further development of an already high-performing shipyard area. Skilled professionals in multiple roles contributed to the process, and the project advanced Finnish shipbuilding significantly. Architectural design was led by Architect Tero Leino, with Sweco Rakennetekniikka responsible for structural design and Planneri Group and LST-Engineering Oy for building services engineering.
Construction began in November 2021. The multipurpose hall was completed at the end of 2022, and the associated office complex was finished in early 2023.
