We built Majakka, the first residential tower of REDI, in Kalasatama, Helsinki. SRV has played a central role in transforming Kalasatama from a former harbour and industrial area into an urban and desirable district for over 4,000 residents. The focal points of the area are the Kalasatama towers, the first of which is Majakka — a 132-metre, 35-storey high-rise that is Finland’s tallest residential building. The first residents moved into Majakka in November 2019.
Majakka was a pioneering high-rise project
Majakka’s construction was a genuine pioneer effort in Finnish high-rise development. When work began, Helsinki’s building regulations did not yet recognise high-rise construction, and the city prepared new guidance during the project. The building was designed by Helin & Co Architects, who also served as the lead designer for the entire REDI complex.
Majakka is a landmark designed with a long lifecycle in mind. As a prominent feature of the cityscape, it strengthens the appeal of the district. High-rise construction involves greater challenges and risks simply because the buildings are larger, but these were anticipated and managed effectively. With the experience gained, SRV continues to refine and streamline the process.
Lifecycle-wise urban living
Environmental responsibility is addressed in many ways in high-rise construction. Majakka is located at the heart of local services and at a key junction of the city’s evolving public transport network. Kalasatama metro station is located within the REDI shopping centre, ensuring excellent connections in all directions. REDI also includes extensive parking facilities. The complex consists of a large shopping and experience centre, residential towers and hotel and office towers.
A range of homes for different needs
Majakka’s homes have an average size of 63 square metres and include green rooms. The tower offers a wide range of homes, from 36 m² two-room apartments to 142.5 m² premium residences. Floors 6–35 are residential floors, and fit-out levels vary depending on the floor. The two top floors house the most spacious Sky apartments. On the 33rd floor, a club floor features a party room, saunas and 200 m² of outdoor terraces. On the fifth-floor level, a large public roof park, Bryga, spreads across the top of the shopping centre.

In place of traditional balconies, the apartments feature glazed, heated green rooms that can serve as terraces or dining spaces. Large windows and generous ceiling heights bring ample natural light into the homes. Residents benefit from a lobby service, and Majakka also offers a dedicated digital portal for accessing a range of services.
