In the major refurbishment of Snellmania, the nearly 200-year-old building was modernised to meet the needs of future users while respecting its cultural and historical value. Traditional structures and working methods were combined with modern building services and new spatial solutions.
SRV carried out the major refurbishment of the culturally and historically significant Snellmania building at the University of Helsinki. Originally built in the 1830s for hospital use, the property was converted in the 1990s into teaching and office facilities for the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Social Sciences. The building is also known as the Main Building of the Old Clinic.
The major refurbishment included demanding conservation work, and a significant share of the work was carried out by hand using traditional methods. Existing materials were also reused wherever possible. The refurbishment works were carried out in close cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency.
One of the key construction phases involved the partial renewal and repair of the timber intermediate floor structures, as well as integrating the renewed building services within the building’s existing spatial constraints.
