SRV to implement Marjoniemi Comprehensive School in Kouvola – adaptable facilities for a total of 840 children
SRV and the City of Kouvola have signed an agreement on the launch of the development phase of the Marjoniemi comprehensive school in Kouvola. The value of the project, which will be implemented as a cooperative project management contract, is approximately EUR 33 million for SRV. In order to be implemented, the project needs an investment decision from the City of Kouvola. The project will be recorded in SRV's order backlog once the construction decision has been confirmed. The project supports SRV's strategic goal of focusing on reinforcing building construction contracting.
The Marjoniemi comprehensive school to be built in the centre of Kouvola is designed for 840 general and special education pupils in grades 1–9. In the future, the pupils of Kaunisnurmi School, Kouvola Secondary School and Urheilupuisto School will be placed in the new comprehensive school. In 2023, the Marjoniemi health centre, which was previously located on the site, was demolished to make way for the school. The planned size of the school is just over 10,000 gross square metres. The aim is to take the new facilities into use by the autumn semester of 2028.
"It is great to continue the good cooperation with the City of Kouvola. Last spring we completed the construction of the Inkeroinen multipurpose building, where the construction work progressed well as agreed. We will bring our diverse expertise in school construction and cooperative contracting to the Marjoniemi comprehensive school project. The cooperative contract model is particularly well suited to school construction and enables the project to be implemented flexibly and by listening to the customer," says SRV's Unit Director Jarkko Salmenoja.
During the development phase, which lasts about six months, the final implementation solutions that best serve the goals set for the project will be sought together with the parties. During the development phase, the total cost and schedule of the project will also be specified. The goal is to start construction in spring 2026.

We have a familiar partner, SRV, with whom we create a adaptable and modern school for users. The project will be a continuation of the City of Kouvola's long-term work to develop a sustainable, learning-supporting and individual school network," says Minna Kortesmaa, property development manager at the City of Kouvola.
A modern learning environment that takes adaptability into account will be implemented in the new building, which will enable the growth and learning path of children and young people in the same building. Adaptability and flexibility are taken into account in both spatial design and structural and technical building solutions. For example, classrooms can be combined or connected to a shared lobby, and some of the specially equipped subject teaching facilities can also be used for general education. The building can be used extensively to serve the residents of the municipality, offering space for organisations, clubs and an adult education centre.
In addition to adaptability, the project also pays special attention to energy efficiency. The building is planned to be implemented in class A in terms of energy efficiency.
