SRV and CSC reach agreement on the implementation phase of the LUMI AI Factory data center
SRV and CSC – IT Center for Science have signed an agreement on the launch of the implementation phase of the LUMI AI Factory data center construction project. The target budget for the project, which will be implemented as a collaborative project management contract, is approximately EUR 54 million. The project will be recorded in SRV's order backlog for December. The project supports SRV's strategic objective of strengthening the company's leading position in cooperative and other contracting, in which the company is strong, especially in public sector projects.
The construction project of the LUMI AI Factory data center started in September 2025 with a development phase, during which technical plans as well as the implementation and project plan and the innovations for the solutions were developed. With the implementation phase, the preparatory work for the site will begin immediately, and construction will begin in January 2026. According to estimates, the new data center will start operating in spring 2027.
"We are excited to start the construction of the new AI Factory together with the client and the project partners. During the development phase, in good cooperation with CSC, we succeeded in finding solutions to the set goals in terms of costs, schedule and quality, and achieved the project's investment criteria. We bring our strong expertise in the implementation of similar technically demanding facilities to the project. In the past, we have built the Helsinki Data Center for Telia, as well as similar projects in the manufacturing industry that are challenging in terms of building technology, such as Okmetic's silicon wafer factory," says SRV's Unit Director Jarkko Salmenoja.

The new data center will be located in the old paper mill hall in the Renforsin Ranta business park area of Kajaani, where the current liquid-cooled LUMI supercomputer operated by CSC is already housed. The building will use Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) for the data center shell.
LUMI AI Factory is one of the EU’s 19 AI Factories
AI Factories are entities built around AI-optimised supercomputers, from which AI researchers and developers can get the computing power, datasets and expertise related to their use – all from the same place. AI Factories will provide researchers, businesses and other users with access to AI development, tools and services based on European values to train and develop AI models.
In the initial phase, the LUMI AI Factory will utilise the current LUMI supercomputer, which will be gradually replaced by a next-generation EuroHPC supercomputer, LUMI-AI. In addition, the LUMI-AI computing environment will be supplemented with an experimental quantum computing platform, LUMI-IQ. A data center for the LUMI-AI and LUMI-IQ systems will be built in the LUMI AI Factory data center project.
The LUMI AI factory is hosted by a consortium including Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland. The AI factory is coordinated by CSC – IT Center for Science; the other project partners from Finland include Aalto University, AI Finland, and the University of Helsinki.
