SRV and CSC reach agreement on the development phase of the LUMI AI Factory data centre
SRV and CSC – IT Center for Science have signed an agreement on the launch of the development phase of the LUMI AI Factory data centre project. The aim of the preliminary planning carried out during the development phase is to determine the project's investment potential by the end of the year. In order to be implemented, the project requires a separate investment decision from CSC. The project will be recorded in SRV's order backlog if a construction decision is confirmed.
The project will be implemented as a cooperative project management contract. The development phase of the project, which has just started, includes the development of technical plans, implementation and project plans, and the innovation of related solutions. The aim is to start the construction work at the beginning of 2026.
"We are excited to start collaborating with CSC to develop the new AI factory project with a modern two-stage project management model. Together with the client, we aim to find the most suitable solutions for the project during the development phase to meet the goals set by the client in terms of costs, schedule and quality. We bring our strong expertise in the implementation of similar technically demanding facilities to the project. In the past, we have built the Helsinki Data Center for Telia, as well as similar projects in the manufacturing industry that are challenging in terms of building technology, such as Okmetic's silicon wafer factory," says SRV's Unit Director Jarkko Salmenoja.
"LUMI AI Factory supports not only top-level research and innovations, but also sustainable growth and cooperation. It creates completely new opportunities for AI development. It is important that we can now start the development phase together with SRV. The AI factory is a very significant project in Finland and Europe," says Kimmo Koski, Managing Director of CSC.
If implemented, the new data center will be located in the Renforsin Ranta business park area of Kajaani, where the current liquid-cooled LUMI supercomputer operated by CSC is already located. According to estimates, the data center would start operating in spring 2027.
Artificial intelligence factories are entities built around AI-optimised supercomputers, from which AI researchers and developers can get the computing power, datasets and expertise related to their use from the same place. AI Factories will provide researchers, companies and other users with access to talent development, tools and user support services based on European values to train and develop AI models.
