WithSecure’s new headquarters has been completed in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki, as part of the Wood City quarter. The property is owned by Union Investment. Constructed mainly from wood, the building is net zero in emissions and has a significant carbon handprint. The project is among the first in Finland to comply with the new EU Taxonomy. With the completion of WithSecure’s office, the unique Wood City wooden quarter is now complete.
Flagship project of Finnish wood construction
WithSecure’s new headquarters was completed in the Wood City quarter developed by SRV, where lifecycle-smart solutions are at the core. The building is net zero in emissions and functions as a carbon sink, supporting sustainable development goals. Approximately 600 tonnes of wood were used as a construction material, storing a significant amount of carbon dioxide and contributing to low-carbon development.
The wood-structured building has been designed for high energy efficiency, making use of operational optimisation and energy recovery. More than 200 square metres of solar panels are installed on the roof, and the property holds an energy class rating of A.
Positive carbon handprint
At WithSecure’s headquarters, sustainability is demonstrated through concrete solutions. The building has been designed to be net zero in emissions and has a significant positive carbon handprint — six kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per square metre per year, whereas the corresponding figure is typically one to two kilograms. This has been achieved by using wood as a primary construction material and by utilising renewable energy sources.
The building is applying for the international LEED Platinum environmental certification, a testament to its high environmental standards and energy efficiency. The building’s performance and environmental responsibility are ensured through continuous monitoring of energy use and indoor conditions throughout its lifecycle.
User-centred design at the core
The design and implementation of the building were carried out in close collaboration with WithSecure and its partners. The users’ needs and preferences were central to the design process, resulting in a modern and functional working environment. The new premises provide WithSecure’s employees with the best possible conditions for comfort, interaction and creativity. Particular attention has been paid to the energy efficiency and environmental performance of the spaces, supporting the company’s sustainable development strategy.
