Kohteen tiedot
Tampere Deck is located right in the heart of the city, built above the railway tracks. It is a versatile hub of experiences, home to Nokia Arena, Veikkaus Casino, Lapland Hotels, retail and office spaces, a practice rink, an underground car park and two residential towers.
A multi-purpose arena
Nokia Arena accommodates concerts for up to 15,000 people throughout the year. It offers Finland’s most modern ice hockey spectator facilities and can be adapted for events of various sizes from a few thousand attendees to large-scale shows and major concerts.
The entire southern deck covers 21,500 square metres, with the arena itself totalling 64,500 square metres. The rink area is 1,725 square metres.
The arena seats more than 13,000 spectators during ice hockey games and up to 15,000 for concerts. At peak construction, the site employed 750 people, and more than 5,000 professionals contributed to the project. Roughly half of them were from the Pirkanmaa region, making this a project largely built by local expertise.
Construction of Nokia Arena began in autumn 2019, and the official opening was celebrated on 15 December 2021.

International architecture
The rising profile of the Deck’s tower buildings and Daniel Libeskind’s internationally recognised architecture have created a striking new landmark for Tampere. Design responsibilities were divided between two architectural practices. Studio Libeskind designed the urban form and massing during the zoning phase, and during construction they provided guidance on façade colours, materials and the placement of signage. Aihio Arkkitehdit designed the building’s interiors and prepared detailed façade drawings under Studio Libeskind’s direction.
The arena’s façade panels are aluminium finished in three tones: bronze, champagne and silver. The multi-purpose arena shimmers in these metallic shades. The metal façade elements are sourced partly from Finland and partly from abroad. The façade’s metal grilles create a dynamic, twisted appearance. The deck is finished with black concrete pavers and grey granite slabs from Kuru.

Sustainability at the core
Sustainability played a central role already in the design phase, enabling the project to achieve LEED Gold certification. Nokia Arena uses wind power and other forms of renewable energy.
Its central location, with excellent public transport connections, minimises the carbon footprint of event travel, as audiences can arrive by train, bus, bicycle or on foot. The arena is cooled using cold groundwater from Lake Näsijärvi, and the ice is produced with a modern CO₂-based refrigeration system.

Nokia Arena provides Tampere with a world-class stage for congresses and trade fairs, while bringing new vibrancy to the city centre.
Award-winning project
Nokia Arena received significant international recognition by winning the prestigious Human-CentriCity Award at the 2024 Seoul Smart City Prize competition. The prize, part of a programme launched by the City of Seoul and the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO), highlights projects that successfully combine technology with human-centred design to advance digital inclusion and everyday wellbeing.
The award was granted to Nokia Arena together with LG Electronics in recognition of their collaboration, where advanced LG display technology enhances the visitor experience.
The investors behind the Tampere Deck project include Lähi-Tapiola, OP, Ilmarinen, SRV and the City of Tampere.
