The expansion and renovation of Terminal 2 strengthen Helsinki Airport’s position as a key hub for air traffic between Europe and Asia, while providing passengers with a seamless and convenient travel experience.
SRV carried out a transformation project at Helsinki Airport using an alliance model, enabling smoother customer service and improved global traffic flow. The project was implemented partly as new construction and partly through the renovation of existing structures.
The extension completed in front of Terminal 2 creates a new type of area serving air passengers. The terminal now features a new check-in area, security screening, baggage claim and arrivals hall. The expansion also includes a travel centre connecting different modes of transport.

The total area of the new building and renovated sections amounted to 75,000 square metres, of which the extension covered 40,000 square metres. During the construction of Terminal 2, environmental sustainability was given particular emphasis. The project successfully combined a smooth and straightforward passenger experience with strong environmental values.
The key strengths of the project included success in delivering a demanding and complex scheme, meeting all the goals set for the alliance, and achieving excellent collaboration within the alliance. The inspiring and successful journey from design to completion was a valuable learning process that produced meaningful results.

The Helsinki Airport Terminal project has received numerous national and international awards, including:
- Construction Site of the Year 2021 by Rakennuslehti
- Steel Structure of the Year 2021
- Winner of the Tekla BIM Awards 2021 for Finland and the Baltic countries
- Winner of the Tekla Global BIM Awards 2022
- European Steel Design Award 2023
The project, which utilised the Lean construction model, enables a smooth and seamless departure experience for passengers and was also a rewarding collaboration for all parties involved in this major public building project. Terminal 2 opened to passengers on 1 December 2021.
