SRV selected to implement the Kokonniemi Sports Centre in Porvoo – users' wishes at the heart of the design
The City of Porvoo has selected SRV as the implementation partner for the new construction project in Kokonniemi. The project, which will be implemented as a cooperative project management contract, is divided into a development phase and two implementation phases. The target price of the project management contract is EUR 48.5 million. At the end of the development phase, the client decides separately on the transition of the new construction project to the implementation phase.
The project will be recorded in SRV's order backlog at the start of the implementation phase. The project supports SRV's strategic goal of strengthening the company's leading position in cooperative and other contracting, in which the company is strong, especially in public sector projects.
The development phase of the project will start immediately and continue until summer 2026. The client will make the decision to move to the construction phase in June 2026. The construction of the ice rink, which will be implemented in the first phase, will begin in autumn 2026, and the construction of the multi-purpose arena in the second phase will begin in summer 2028. The estimated completion of the building complex is in the summer of 2030.
"The implementation of the Kokonniemi Sports Centre is progressing well, and our team is now ready. SRV, Verstas Architects and AINS Group form a competent and committed partner network with whom we will successfully complete this significant project," says Jarkko Vainionpää, CEO of the Kokonniemi Sports Centre, which represents the City of Porvoo.
The planning will be specified during the rest of the year with a service design process in which the users of the premises and interested Porvoo residents participate.
"The Kokonniemi Sports Centre is a regionally significant project, and we are excited to join the project. During the development phase, in close cooperation with the parties we will develop design solutions based on the needs of future users, while taking into account the overall cost-efficiency and the client's targets," says SRV's Unit director Marko Räisänen.
SRV brings its previous experience in the design and implementation of multi-purpose arena and sports facilities to the project. SRV has previously implemented the world-class Nokia Arena experience arena in the centre of Tampere and the wooden event centre Satama Areena in Kotka. SRV is currently building the Hyvinkää Arena multi-purpose arena in Hyvinkää. SRV is also involved in the development phases of significant arena projects planned for Helsinki, Turku and Oulu.
Kokonniemi's extensive sports and outdoor recreation area is located about a kilometre from the centre of Porvoo. The area offers a wide range of opportunities for exercise and leisure activities. The plan is to create a versatile sports centre in the area for sports facilities, events and services. The project will be implemented in phases, including an ice arena with two indoor ice rinks and a multi-purpose arena with facilities for ball games, gymnastics, group exercise, and track and field. The total scope of the project is 23,500 gross square metres. At the same time, a separate infrastructure project is also being carried out in the area, which will develop the area's traffic solutions, parking areas and outdoor fields.
