SRV selected for the development phase of the new building complex of Tampere University Hospital
SRV and the Wellbeing Services County of Pirkanmaa have signed a development-phase agreement on the construction project in the final phase of the Tampere University Hospital renewal programme. The project, which will be implemented as a cooperative project management contract, is divided into a development phase and several implementation phases, the total value of which for SRV will be approximately EUR 600 million, if implemented.
The project is estimated to be recorded in SRV's order backlog in accordance with the phases ordered under the implementation phase agreement in 2026–2028. The project supports SRV's strategic goal of strengthening the company's leading position in cooperative and other contracting, in which the company is strong, especially in public sector projects. If realised, the project will generate a significant share of SRV's revenue over the next few years. The project does not tie up SRV's capital.
The development phase of the project will start immediately and continue until summer 2026. During the development phase, preparatory work will be carried out to prepare for construction. The construction of the first blocks is estimated to begin in autumn 2026, and the final phase of the building complex is estimated to be completed in 2032.
"We are now proceeding to the development phase with SRV, in which we will specify the planning of the project's implementation, ensure the cost level in line with the client's target, and steer and develop implementation plans. At the same time, technology transfers and preparatory work for construction will be carried out. A separate consultant agreement and a project management contract for the transfer of technology are made with the contractor for the development phase. The signing of the agreement for the implementation phase will be topical in summer 2026," says Project Director Veli-Pekka Tanhuanpää from the Wellbeing Services County of Pirkanmaa.
The aim of the construction project in the final phase of the Tays renewal programme and the related operational changes is to secure client-oriented specialised medical care services in the Wellbeing Services County of Pirkanmaa in the coming decades, as the need for demanding specialised medical care in the area increases as a result of the ageing of the population and population growth, and at the same time the sufficiency of resources must be ensured.
The new building complex of Tampere University Hospital will house many of the main hospital functions, such as the emergency department Acuta, intensive care and operating rooms, as well as imaging units, inpatient care for the obstetrician, the head centre, and units of internal medicine and pulmonary diseases, gynaecology, gastroenterology and gastrosurgery, urology and general surgery. The total area of the M building complex of Tampere University Hospital will be approximately 125,000 square metres. In total, approximately 170,000 square metres of new premises will be built in the final phase of the renewal programme.
"It is great to start the development phase of one of Finland's most significant hospital projects, where we will be able to utilise the special expertise accumulated in SRV's previous projects. During the development phase, we aim to develop design solutions that achieve the client's goals of functionally appropriate, adaptable spaces and create an economically sensible entity in the long term," says Tero Karislahti, Senior Vice President, Regional Units at SRV.
In recent years, SRV has built several demanding special healthcare facilities, such as the new child and adolescent psychiatry building at Tampere University Hospital, which is under construction, and the extensive Tays Etupiha project completed in 2019, in which three new buildings were built.
"The construction of the Laakso Joint Hospital in Helsinki and Ohkola, which is currently being completed, and the new ward building in Jorvi in Espoo are also currently underway. Previously, we have also carried out the construction of the Bridge Hospital and the New Children's Hospital in Helsinki, and the Central Finland Central Hospital Nova, as well as renovation of the operating theatres of Jorvi Hospital in Espoo and the emergency department annex," Karislahti says.
