Wood City is an international flagship of Finnish wood construction

Wood City is a significant showcase of Finnish wood construction, raising the country’s expertise to an international level. Developed by SRV in cooperation with Stora Enso and designed by Anttinen Oiva Architects, the Wood City complex exemplifies innovation, design and sustainability.

“From the very beginning, the idea behind Wood City has been to introduce a new way of thinking about business premises in Finland and to create a unique wooden block that combines design and sustainable development,” says Jouni Forsman, SRV’s Senior Vice President, Business Premises Construction in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

This lifecycle-wise development is located at the gateway to Helsinki’s Jätkäsaari district, easily accessible by diverse transport connections. The block combines living and working in one urban environment. Wood City can be reached conveniently by public transport, with Helsinki city centre only a ten-minute tram ride away. By 2030, Jätkäsaari will be home to more than 20,000 residents and provide jobs for around 6,000 people.

High-quality business premises for pioneering companies

Two internationally significant Finnish technology companies, Supercell and WithSecure, have chosen to locate their offices in the Wood City complex. The office buildings were designed in close cooperation with the clients to ensure that they meet the demanding needs of their employees. The design emphasises flexible working environments, sustainable thinking and employee wellbeing.

Each client was provided with a workplace that reflects their company culture and operations — spaces where employees enjoy working now and in the future. The property aims to achieve the international LEED Platinum environmental certification upon completion.

Significantly smaller carbon footprint thanks to wood material

In the Wood City complex, wood is used extensively and visibly in exterior walls, the frame, roof structures and façade cladding. As a building material, wood is an excellent choice for achieving lifecycle-wise construction. It is the only fully renewable and recyclable material that also stores carbon.

As a result, the carbon footprint of a wooden building is significantly smaller than that of a concrete structure. In addition, wood is both acoustically and visually pleasant, improving indoor air quality. Studies have even shown that spending time in wooden buildings can help reduce stress levels.
